One day, I went with a friend of mine from high school to the Al-Mawrada Stadium, in the Banat neighborhood of Omdurman, where he trains as a basketball player. He was attending the training sessions which have been taking place every Monday, following the suspension of the Basketball League in Sudan. Various administrative and political issues that the country has been experiencing in recent years were responsible for the league’s suspension in March 2021. I noticed that all of the players were locals from the Banat neighborhood, and their beginnings in basketball had been in this stadium. Even though each one of them had moved to different clubs over the years, after the suspension of the Basketball League, they were all able to return to the training grounds that had remained open to them. This story tells of the struggles that athletes and sportspeople face in Sudan, due to the lack of a suitable environment for their skills to flourish, as well as the interference of politics in their various activities.
